About Us

Approximately 30,000 people in the Ottawa area have developmental disabilities.  Most of them have a family that provides at least some of their support.  Only those individuals under the age of 18 are entitled to Ontario government services (with the exception of the Ontario Disability Supports Program).

Once you reach the age of 18, you are triaged through a rigorous assessment process managed through a government agency.  This assessment dictates what services and support will be the most useful.  It does not promise their availability.  In a nutshell, this is the gauntlet that parents and their offspring have to navigate.  The wait for an assessment is somewhere between 6 months and 3 years, once the individual is 18.  Once the assessment is written up, the wait for services can be anywhere from 1 year to 10 years and more.  Just as an example, there are approximately 900 people in the queue for residential support in the Ottawa area.

FMC was founded over 10 years ago and continues to operate in this environment.  FMC serves families that are starved for information on how they can work on their own and with others in the community to build and fashion the resources and supports that their loved ones require to be an included part of Ottawa.  Families are anxious for the guidance to construct the innovative solutions to provide meaningful daytime activities, safe social interaction and appropriate supported housing.

FMC is an Ottawa-based co-operative that:

  • Supports families assisting loved ones with developmental disabilities.
  • Offers workshops, seminars and networking opportunities that help families explore innovative opportunities to provide for their loved ones with no or minimal government support.
  • Provides other services that include individual advice and guidance on how to navigate a complex government system, as well as social opportunities for families and their loved ones. Most of our families have adult family members with developmental disabilities.
  • Raises awareness about and advocates for people with developmental disabilities and their families as full participants of the community.
  • Attends provincial meetings representing families’ interests.
  • Serves approximately 500 clients a year.
  • Has a current membership of about 200.
  • Our long-term goal is to ensure that every family in Ottawa that needs our help to build a better life for themselves and their loved ones has access to it.

Our vision is for people in Ottawa with developmental disabilities, their families and circles of support to have a good life and to be welcomed fully in the community. Full participation includes meaningful daytime activities, housing and recreation, along with the supports needed to be as independent as possible.

We are an autonomous family organization.  We offer support, information, networking opportunities and innovative solutions for families, whose loved ones have developmental disabilities.  We work with other organizations to help families provide a full and inclusive life for their loved ones in this community.

As a co-operative, we value openness, respect and democratic control.   We agree to share information and support each other.  We respect the right of individuals and families to choose the supports and services that best suit their need.  We value advocacy and partnering with other organizations to further our mission.
