Best Buddies

Best Buddies Program
2017-18 Season

Families Matter Co-Operative (FMC) is in its 2nd year of the Best Buddies Program.

The Best Buddies College/University Program pairs students in post-secondary institutions with adults from the community with intellectual disabilities.  To be involved in the Program, people with intellectual disabilities must be receiving services from a partner community agency.  Applicants to the Program via Families Matter will be paired with students from Carleton University.

The Program gives people with intellectual disabilities the chance to have experiences which most people take for granted – going for coffee, out to a movie, or simply enjoying the company of a good friend. To this end, Best Buddies establishes chapters at elementary schools, high schools, universities and colleges across the country. At each chapter, students are matched with people with intellectual disabilities who share similar interests. The “Buddy Pairs” call each other weekly and get together approximately twice a month. Four times a year, all the Buddy Pairs at a chapter hold a group activity. Each chapter is managed by a student volunteer, who is assisted by a person with an intellectual disability, a Buddy Advocate, where possible.

A person with an intellectual disability who is a member of a Best Buddies chapter who is paired with a student in a one-to-one friendship. Buddies call their “Peer Buddies” on the telephone once per week, and see them every two weeks.
